Let’s be honest, I don’t think anyone ever wants to settle down in Hollywood – it’s a place you go to work. And once you’ve hit it, you get out of there as soon as you can. It’s definitely not a place you want to get married and have kids.

I think the reason why female directors are so successful is because they’re not just telling women stories. They might be telling stories that affect women but their studies on men are done so well so that they’re universal directors. Making African American films are hard in Hollywood. We need to rely on a support network and bring more cohesion to different filmmakers, actors, producers etc. It’s a very difficult business. There aren’t a lot of Africans Americans or people of color in high positions in Hollywood that we can green-light films.

I’m a natural blonde. But when I started acting, I would go to auditions and they didn’t know where to put me because I was voluptuous and had the accent–but I had blonde hair. It was ignorance: they thought every Latin person looks like Salma Hayek.

Latins, we’re like that! We’re very passionate and very loud and we scream and shout, but then we forget.

 My father told me if I did anything artistic, I would look like a hooker. I told him, “With these huge boobs that I inherited from your mother, I already look like a hooker!”.
